When the Smoke Clears…will you know where you stand?
A revolution is under way and it’s throwing up billowing clouds of smoke and dust. The electronic music movement is undergoing a seismic shift and When the Smoke Clears, we offer you this. Nine crews who have stood to deliver their passion for a music that extends beyond style and speaks something of a cultural imperative. Part of which is to embrace the new and see where it leads, and hope like hell that it retains the essence of the original vision. And so this legion has joined together to deliver something big: A party experience where the arts of Dj’ing and of live production of the techno sound get worked over by people who live by it. Dj’ing in it’s myriad forms: vinyl, cd’s, laptops, controllers, the sync dilema, para-production, multi source looping: we will be bringing all of this to the table and sitting you front and centre in the performance arena of where dj’ing is at..now. Nothing is taken for granted. Trust techno to do it, because it’s the techno credo. It’s the art of the thing. And the art is being examined right now. Come and be a part of it. When the Smoke Clears, will you know where you stand?

It’s an amalgamation of tracks I’ve either instantly or over time, for what ever reason fell in love with, either I’ve seen people go mental on the dance floor, shared it with a lover, or developed an appreciation.

With most of my mixes I set up rules to help me build them, with this mix, they had to cover genre’s and style flows that would usually go against the status quo – This is why you hear Cindy Lauper in the mix with Ricardo Villalobos or The Klaxons next to Dibiase.

Interestingly a ‘love’ theme does seem to be apparent throughout… I do find most people’s favorite tracks tend to be more heart felt.

As an artist I’ve always taken a lot from the Solid Steel DJ’s, DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin and recently SBTRKT – These artists have found ways to piece together unlikely rhythms and styles that generate ideas…

On the whole, I’m not sure what your take will be. The flow is pretty smooth and the structure is somewhat chaotic, especially if you know me for bigger techno shows. There are three distinct sections set up in half hour blocks – Which I have found really cool for listening on public transport – What ever mood your in, you can scan through. Don’t forget the track list is on the MP3 when you download it.

A discussion I have been having lately with other artists is how the style of listening has changed since Beatport took over from vinyl. In the pre digital days the music shops and DJ’s had more control over the tracks and therefore were able to dictate, to a larger extent what the crowd heard and when. Where as now… all tracks are available at all times making it more of a buyers market. The DJ is there to play what the crowd wants to hear which unfortunately reduces the room for expression and creativity of the artist.

For me what that means is less of a creative and artistic output and more of entertainment… And perhaps other DJ’s and producers out there may feel the same.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, playing tunes is awesome. It’s more the question of what direction are we heading in currently? We aren’t going back to vinyl and the music industry doesn’t seem to be getting any less commercial…?

So take from this mix what you will, love it or hate it, these are the tracks that have forged a big part of my musical path over the last 6 years or more.

All Love

Not seen on Australian shores since 2004, his long awaited reappearance is highly anticipated and his live show needs to be seen to be believed. With limited performances at only the world’s top festivals, this is a once in a lifetime chance to see his live show in all its glory.

Arguably one of the most influential electronic artist in the history of contemporary dance music, Aphex Twin (AKA Richard David James) has been twisting minds and taking dancefloors on epic ‘braindance’ journeys since the release of his debut EP ‘Analogue Bubblebath’ back in 1991.

Making use of a whopping 14 monikers during his career, as Aphex Twin he is best known and loved for his groundbreaking albums ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’, ‘Selected Ambient Works Volume 2’, ‘…I Care Because You Do’, ‘Richard D. James Album’ and ‘Druqks’), and iconic tunes like ‘Come To Daddy’, and ‘Windowlicker’.

Renowned for trawling the sweetest sounds from a range of genres – including ambient, acid, breakbeat, techno and noise – and mixing them up to set the world on fire, this veritable genius is a true master, in every sense of the word.

Aphex Twin will be supported by Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313) on these two very special dates.

Detroit Techno legend and electronic music pioneer – get ready for highly INTIMATE NIGHT with the official ambassador of techno music – the one and only DERRICK MAY. Strict limited capacity event..no more than 300 tickets to experience DERRICK MAY for five hours…
Tickets on sale Monday 20th Feb. wearenovel.com.au

Mayday, mayday: Talk about a true legend of electronic music and the name DERRICK MAY is indisputably mentioned, and for very good reason.

MAY’s narrative is wedged into electronic music folklore, no less than 25 years ago, in the heart of techno land, Detroit – Michigan, USA. His influence continues to resonate across the globe and maintains his position as one of the most in demand DJ/producers.

On the other side of the globe in Australia’s music mecca, Melbourne bred smalltown quickly gains similar esteem. With 4 unforgettable and distinctive events already under its belt, smalltown has set the clubbing standard to the highest caliber. With the bar set so high, the architects behind the brand have set out to create yet again another memorable and distinct night for dance music devotees.

The 5th installation of smalltown, crafts the coziest clubbing experience possible with the legendary DERRICK MAY this Anzac Day Eve, 24th April 2012. Having only toured in larger venues in recent years, now his fans can enjoy getting up close and personal with DERRICK MAY by purchasing 1 of the only 300 available tickets to this exclusive event from the good folk at Novel. To add to the buzz, the smalltown posse will reveal the venue one week before the show!

DERRICK MAY
The story goes that in the mid ‘80s, May – also known as Rhythim is Rhythim, joined forces with Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins (who became known as the Belleville Three) to fashion a completely new genre of music that, today, we all take for granted.

May is credited with shaping and steering house music’s future. The Belleville Three tested the limits of electronic music and changed it forever. Call May a visionary – the music now commonly known as ‘techno’, is May’s invention.

May’s ability to connect what is in his head with the feelings of what is on the dance floor is known the world over – his dedication to perfection is celebrated.

His production and solo recording exploits may have halted over the past decade but his legacy has rolled on throughout the years, thanks to numerous remixes, re-works and collaborations with some of the most experimental musicians going, including Depeche Mode and ABC.

What makes a Derrick May DJ set so uniquely exceptional is his ability to intermingle genres, taking records of years past and making them work in today’s crowded musical sphere. Take Icon, a May masterpiece, where the strings sound just as powerful and prevalent today as they did years ago.

The ‘classic’ Derrick May noise is a finite balance between percussion-laded cascades of sound complemented with samples and melody. If you want to know what makes Derrick May special, listen to any of his mixes to discover how he inspires people to love techno for what it is – not the sub-culture, the drugs or the mystique, it’s all about the music.

May has performed around the globe for over two decades and honed his Transmat techno label into one of the most respected outputs in the world. A pioneer of techno, May produces Hi-Tek Soul or “George Clinton meeting Kraftwerk in an elevator.” May makes techno poetry – hear him live and expect a night of unrefined emotion delivered with passion

Since being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90’s, David Flores aka Audio Injection has been hooked. At the early age of 15 he started Djing and playing out at local underground events and raves around the Southern California area. You would find him spinning various styles from house, acid, & techno to hardcore techno.
After years of Djing he then decided to learn to produce his own music, which landed him releases on techno labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, & local label Droid Recordings. Since being associated with local event production group Droid Behavior in 2003, you can find him as a resident at the infamous Interface warehouse events as well as a regular producer for Droid Recordings along with Drumcell (Co-Founder of Droid Behavior). He has also played together with Drumcell at Berghain, Berlin in 2010 & 2011 as well as playing gigs in Athens, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne, Wales, and various gigs throughout the U.S. and Mexico.
In early 2011 David started a project called ‘Truncate’ which focuses on the deeper, darker, and more raw side of techno. His Truncate releases have been getting support from big players such as, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Jonas Kopp, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, Dvs1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Silent Servant, Technasia, and many more.
With releases & remixes on labels such as Droid, CLR, Electric Deluxe, Sleaze, BluFin, Enemy, Impact Mechanics, Ground Factory and many more, Audio Injection continues to shape his own sound as well as collaborate with Drumcell to release more mind bending techno, putting Los Angeles & Droid Recordings on the techno map.

ADVANCED HUMAN (Synewave/Gynoid Audio) SYD
Inspired by the early electronic sounds of Detroit and Chicago, along with nascent German techno and the underground sounds of Belgian New Beat, Advanced Human struck out on his own versatile music career in 1988 as DJ Hi-Shock. Ever since – always striving to perfect his skills, he’s taken both vinyl-spinning and production work to the highest level. In recent years he has developed and helms the wildly successful Elektrax Music label group (which includes Elektrax Recordings, Gynoid Audio, Android Muziq, Darknet & Hypnotic Room).
Under his recent Advanced Human alias, he has released his own sounds through labels like Gynoid Audio, Slap Jaxx, Impact Mechanics and Synewave – along the way being charted and played by the likes of Tommy Four Seven, Luke Slater, Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer, Joseph Capriati, Damon Wild, Len Faki and Dave Clarke amongst others.
Currently his trademark sound is based on exploring the uncharted terrains of Deep/Gritty Techno, that is rich with dub chords and crunchy atmospheres surrounded by intricate percussion and a drive aimed at the dance floor.

SIMON SLIEKER (Monotremes / Machine)
Simon Slieker’s 17 year pursuit as a dj and audio artist has been one of immersion into the dynamics of the dancefloor. His love of electronic music and dance culture is a lifelong unraveling of a techno ball of string; an examination of the dance journey, that most particular undertaking, evocative of inner worlds and old wisdom accessed by the body in motion. The sense of journey he creates as a dj is indicative of this: insistent and intense yet sensitive to the subtle textures which allow breath. The throughline, a mesmerizing and hypnotic drive. Vinyl, computer, controllers, the accessories of the art. Techno, minimal, progressive, tech house: the pigmentation of the soundscape.
In 2010 he launched his new label MACHINE to focus on the forward sounds of Techno

Join the smalltown & electric owl crews on Friday 2nd March for an evening of dynamic musical programming with Steve Bug, Silicone Soul & special guests.

Germany’s very own taste-maker, trend-setter, mover-shaker-extraordinaire Steve Bug is a multi-faceted artist who refuses to back down from the limelight. A dedicated, energetic and constantly surprising talent, Steve is nothing less than an electronic music ambassador, a much-loved spokesman to the people, and for good reason. Join us for an extended set with with Bug for what promises to be a credible excursion through cutting edge electronic sounds.

There’s an emotional depth and subtle cinematic mischief running through Silicone Soul’s music of a sort rarely glimpsed in electronic dance music. They’ve never copied the afore-mentioned musical heroes, but that same indefinable spirit which drove them seems to have taken root in their creative juice dispenser. Unique and 100% class we are thrilled to welcome Silicone Soul back to Melbourne. Joining them on the Garden Terrace is Gareth Witehead, Gareth is a regular go to man for artists such as Anja Schneider, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, & Derrick May, and will be releasing an EP on Steve Bug’s very own Poker Flat imprint one week before the show on Feb 25.

Steve Bug [Poker Flat]

Who is a dedicated, mover, shaker and tastemaker who is energetic and an electronic music ambassador? Germany’s Steve Bug fits the bill nicely.

The German DJ and producer is also a family man. Well, the acclaimed German spinner is head honcho of a family of record labels that releases deep house, minimal and tech house. His family runs deep – split into three labels with his regarded Poker Flat label focusing on tech, Dessous Recordings going for house material and Audiomatique aiming for new talent.

Think of Bug and his classic assemblage Da Minimal Funk no doubt springs to mind. Or it could be his seminal Loverboy, which introduced audiences to a darker and minimal yet undeniable funky production. Moreover, his debut album, The Other Day, released via Poker Face, rightly stands as the benchmark of futuristic musical fusion.

So it’s little wonder why Bug is heralded as a wickedly talented artist who is diverse and dishes up electronic music variety in buckets loads. Yep – the German DJ’s sets normally include a bit of anything and everything that his record labels release.

Bug’s churned out countless productions, remixes and off-the-cuff studio sessions, including his essential Bugnology mix series (now in its third instalment), his Collaboratory album, mixes for Fabric and Fuse as well as his exclusive digital album, Time Flies -The Best of Steve Bug 1998-2008.

That Bug has roused support for his versatility and trademark range speak volumes – it’s why he has endured himself to punters all over the globe. Seeing Bug live is a site to behold. Known for using and integrating Final Scratch technology, his impending visit to Australia should send most dance lovers running to purchase a ticket immediately, particularly as he is a hard man to grasp these days. Such is the demand for his silky skills he’s visited Japan, Europe and South America over the past few years.

Bugged out? Get in quick and he’s not in town for long.

Silicone Soul

Since first appearing on Slam’s seminal Soma label in the late 90’s through to their more recent releases on Darkroom Dubs. Silicone Soul have always held a special place in the overcrowded field of electronic dance music. Their pioneering and evolving sound have seen them release four critically acclaimed albums, gain residencies at some of Europe’s most celebrated clubs, scoop numerous DJ Mag awards, play festival arenas, storm the UK charts and launch their own imprint. But their passions and instincts belong to the dancefloor, famously turning down Top of the Pops in 2001 when their club anthem ‘Right On’ broke out of the underground into the Top 10. Free from vacuous trends, it is their esoteric, melodically driven and timeless style that have seen them remain relevant today.

2011 has seen them celebrate their 50th Darkroom Dubs release with a roster that has included the likes of Kiki, Robag Wruhme and Alex Niggemann. Whilst becoming a mainstay of the UK’s most influential techno label, culminating in the release of their “20 Years Of Soma Records” Dj Mix Compilation.
